About the Area
As well as the Grotto, Viaduct and museum, one of Pontypool's most noted landmarks is The Folly, a structure dating from the eighteenth century. The Folly was built by the eminent Hanbury family, who once owned most of the land in Pontypool. The tower was such a prominent attraction and guide to enemy aircraft during World War Two was demolished and it was almost fifty years before action was taken to restore it to its former glory.
Pontypool also offers a leisure centre, four comprehensive schools and many places of worship of all denominations.
