About the Area

Caldicot Castle

Caldicot – a community with heart

Caldicot, a town that has grown considerably over the past two hundred years, occupies a commanding position creating a natural focal point for the people of the nearby low-lying moors that stretch alongside the Severn estuary towards Newport, in the West, and Chepstow, in the East.

So favoured is it that over the years it has been the naturally landing point for invaders as far back as the iron age and, more recently, the Romans, all of whom have left their imprints on the locality. Most recently the town was expanded by an influx of steelworkers who left their communities in Ebbw Vale and Port Talbot to become the nucleus of the giant Llanwern steelworks in the early 1960s. Many of these “incomers” have put down roots in Caldicot and have enriched the area with their energy and sense of neighbourhood but have now become fully entrenched in what has become a vibrant small township with its own sense of community.

The town has several key focal points, starting with its castle. No longer called upon the defend its occupants against the marauding natives the castle, now in the ownership of the local authority, provides open green space and imposing state rooms that are made available as an amenity for local people to use. This use of amenity space has been considerably enhanced over recent years, first by the provision of local playing fields in the late 1950s then by the addition of a “Village College” as part of the social developments of the 1960s.

Within the community can be found a range of social activities. These include:

Local operatic society
Scouts and Guides
Local rugby and cricket clubs
A jazz society

For history buffs many special features delight the eye. Within 5 miles of the town centre may be found four castles – plus an additional one that is now derelict, one of the most complete Roman city walls in the UK, a Roman amphitheatre, many Roman houses and other remains, 5 Iron age encampments, several bronze age standing stones and tumuli, an iron age causeway, the largest church on the moors, the Severn tunnel (and a wealth of 19th century buildings supporting it), a 19th century terrace which is one of the earliest examples of system built concrete housing – and within ten miles ore standing stones and some of the earliest sites of John Wesley’s open-air preaching in the UK. Only two miles from the town centre is the site of a hunting lodge erected for and used by King Harold (later to receive an arrow in his eye at the battle of Hastings) and an abandoned church that still contains the bones of a 19th century seafarer who perished on the rocks off Sudbrook! More recent, from the camp at Sudbrook can be seen both the Severn Bridge at Chepstow and the second Severn Crossing a few hundred yards to the West.

This is a veritable treasure chest of living history.

Schools: There are several schools in the town, including:

Caldicot Community College
Caldicot Comprehensive School
Durand Primary School
Green Lane Junior School
St Mary's Junior School
