About the Area
In the past, Abertillery and the surrounding areas relied upon the production of coal and other heavy industry for its prosperity. Times have now changed and the Town has undergone and continues to undergo substantial regeneration. The Town has a population of around 20,000 making it one of the largest towns in ‘Blaenau Gwent.’ This population continues to steadily grow as more and more people move to the area. Abertillery offers excellent road links to Newport, Cardiff and Bristol. The local towns of Newbridge, Blackwood, Brynmawr and Ebbw Vale are also within easy reach. There are also plans for a Railway Station to be built just outside Abertillery, which would provide a regular service to Cardiff and Newport. This is anticipated to be completed within the next few years. The Town Centre has many well known high street shops including ‘Woolworths’ and ‘Peacocks.’ There is also a large selection of banks and a Post Office, as well as many independent traders offering that personal touch. There is also a ‘Tesco’ as well as a ‘Somerfield.’ For those looking for a greater shopping experience the nearby towns of Ebbw Vale and Blackwood offer an even greater abundance of retail outlets.. For the more active there are plenty of opportunities to exercise. There is a new Leisure Centre with top class facilities and a Swimming Pool, as well as numerous sporting clubs and organisations, so whether you enjoy Football, Rugby or Athletics, there is something here for you. For the less active there are also numerous walks, museums and libraries throughout the area.
If you have children, then education is a priority. ‘Blaenau Gwent’ has numerous well regarded Primary and Secondary Schools throughout the area.
The region also offers a wealth of other jewels such as: Cwmtillery Lakes. These can be found on the mountains just above Abertillery set within rambling farmland. This is a popular local tourist spot offering picturesque scenery, tranquil walks and the opportunity for a spot of fishing. St Illtyds Church, Brynithel. This award winning twelfth century building is a superb place to visit. It is recognised as being of national importance and is an ideal introduction to the areas rich heritage.
